Description
Obsidian head with an almost triangular face, the sides extending from the forehead and cheeks to the slightly protruding chin. Sculpturally moulded lips, the corners of the mouth clearly separating the cheeks and chin. Tall nose terminating into prominent, bulging eye arches, each surmounted by a groove. Eye sockets with well-defined eyes, eyelids, and pupils. The stylisation corresponds largely to Sabaean alabaster heads. Obsidian as material is however unusual and rare. Slight wear, otherwise a well-preserved and impressive example of a small Sabaean sculpture made of particularly fine material. Preserved height 12 cm.Provenance: Rhenish private collection, acquired from an art dealer in Cologne in the 1990s.
