Description

The high skull made of exquisite gilt brass, complete with all mounts. A circlet inscribed "3RD. OR PRINCE OF WALES'S DRAGN. GUARDS" on the front, oak leaves in relief on the back. The elaborate, double-layered helmet emblem with the British coat of arms appliquéd on the front, the motto "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" and "DIEU ET MON DROIT" plus a lion and unicorn, below which the honour banners for Albuher, Talavera, Vittoria and Peninsula. High comb, with lavish oak leaf decoration in relief on both sides, large bearskin crest. Appliquéd floral ornaments on the sides of the skull and at the back. Large, multi-part chinscales with black velvet underlay on rosettes in the shape of Tudor roses, the fasteners of the chinscales formed as lion's paws. The inside with a red leather sweatband and white silk lining (small tears, somewhat stained). The front and rear visors lined in green leather (minor imperfections). Size approximately 56. Slightly damaged in places, signs of age. Rare, magnificent helmet from the early Victorian era.
