Description
The badge made of partially enamelled silver, the gilt medallion with silver dragons, one small, smooth and one large, engraved coral. An enamelled suspension ring on both sides. Diameter 55 mm, weight 29.97 g. The eight-rayed breast star in silver, the partially enamelled and gilt medallion with silver dragons and a large, engraved coral (the small one has been lost). Gold inscription around the edge. A vertical pin on the back. Diameter 92.5 mm, weight 82.04 g. Together with the burgundy ribbed silk sash in the yellow presentation case (somewhat dented, minor imperfections), lined in orange-red silk and violet velvet. From 16 July 1900, Maximilian Graf von Montgelas, then holding the rank of Major, served as battalion commander in the 4th and 2nd Infantry Regiment of the East Asiatic Expedition Corps and was appointed military attaché at the Imperial German Legation in Peking on 19 November 1901 until his return at the end of August 1903. The award of the first model suggests the years 1901/02 as this class was typical of foreign military attachés.Provenance: From a private collection in South Germany, acquired during the 1950/60s.
