beiden Figuren wurde am Rücken ein feiner Metallstift angebracht,

der der Befestigung auf einem Sockel dient. Intakt. Höhe 11,8 cm, mit

Sockel 17 cm.

Provenienz: Aus österreichischem Kunsthandel. Davor französische

Privatsammlung, erworben am 16. Dezember 2008 bei Gorny &Mosch.

A pair of Roman bronze statuettes of

torchbearers, 2nd – 3rd century

Two bronze torchbearers in identical poses, dressed only in an animal

skin that is draped over their right shoulders down to their left hips.

Carrying a large, heavy torch in their right hands, this extending over

their right shoulders and supported beneath the flame by their left hands

being raised above their heads. The left leg stepping slightly forward,

the resulting rotation of the body is underlined by turning the head to

the right. The legs and raised left arms fully sculptured in the round; by

contrast, the back of the figures is flat and was fitted with an iron spike

in the centre, to allow the statuette to be attached to another object. This

spike is only preserved on one figure. Slight variations in the decoration

of the animal skin and the design of the heads. The top of the torch bent

forwards on one statuette. A fine metal pin mounted on the back of both

figures as fastening for a pedestal. Intact. Height 11.8 cm, including

pedestal 17 cm.
