Unique set of historical significance on the his-
tory of Venice in the Napoleonic era. After the
republic of Venice refused to form an alliance
with Napoleon for his Italian campaign, the
French general Andoche Junot gave the city an
ultimatum, which was not accepted. An initial
attack of the French fleet was averted two days
later. But the republic was defeated as early as 12
May, the last Doge resigned, and Venetia, Istria
and Dalmatia were given to Austria in
accordance with the negotiations in the Treaty of
Leoben (18.4.1797) and the Contract of Campo-
formio (17.10.1797). After only eight years the
Habsburgs lost Venice through the Peace of
Pressburg (26.12.1805) to France and the city
was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy.
