Bronzestatuette, kanaanitisch,
Ende 2. - Anfang 1. Jtsd. v. Chr.
Ithyphallische Darstellung einer Figur mit er-
hobenen Armen. In der Linken schwingt sie
einen Schlagstock/Keule. Eine Identifizie-
rung mit der kanaanäischen Gottheit Reschef
liegt nahe. Dann wäre der verlorene Gegen-
stand in der Linken wohl als Schild zu rekon-
struieren. Die großen Ohren sind gelocht und
trugen einst Ohrringe. Im Gegensatz zu dem
plastisch stärker gegliederten Kopf bleiben
Torso und Beine flach. Grüne Patina. Figu-
ren wie diese wurden in Tempeln als Votiv-
gaben dargebracht oder dienten im Haushalt
dazu, böse Geister abzuwehren. Mit dekora-
tivemHolzsockel. Bis auf den verlorenen Ge-
genstand in der Rechten intakt. Höhe 9,2 cm,
mit Sockel 14,5 cm.
Provenienz: Aus österreichischem Kunst-
handel, zuvor Ex-Pierre Bergé Auktion vom
26. November 2013, davor englische Privat-
sammlung.
A Canaanite bronze statuette,
end of the 2nd – beginning of the
1st millennium B.C.
Ithyphallic representation of a figure with
raised arms. The left hand swinging a cudgel
or club. It seems reasonable to identify the
statuette as the Canaanite deity Resheph. In
which case, the lost object in his right hand
could presumably be reconstructed as a
shield. The large ears pierced, originally hol-
ding earrings. The torso and legs are flat, in
contrast with the more fully sculptured head.
Green patina. Figures such as this were pre-
sented as votive offerings in temples or used
to ward off evil spirits in the home. With a de-
corative wooden base. Intact, apart from the
object missing from the figure’s right hand.
Height 9.2 cm, including pedestal 14.5 cm.

trade, previously ex-Pierre Bergé Auction of
26 November 2013, formerly in a private Eng-
lish collection.
