A helmet for the Palace Guard under Emperor

Maximilian I of Mexico 1864-67

Nickel-silver skull, brass mounts with rem-

nants of gold plating, gold and diamond-stud-

ded, silvered and gilt rivet heads, respectively.

The front peak (one lateral rivet missing) is

unprofessionally fastened, the rear peak cov-

ered with green velvet. The helmet spike in the

form of a Mexican eagle clutching a serpent in

its talons and beak, with partially polished

gold-plating in outstanding condition. The

silver helmet plate for troopers is the star of the

Order of the Mexican Eagle set in gold on the

medallion with remnants of gold-plating. The

leather-lined chinscales of Austrian pattern

with remnants of gold plating, the rosettes

applied with the silvered and gilt star of the

Order of the Mexican Eagle, national cockade

of lacquered sheet metal. Light leather sweat

band is loosely enclosed. Silk lining.

One of the most magnificent and rarest

helmets. Of the approximately 40 which must

have been made, only a small number still

exists today. Most of the soldiers of the palace

guard fell during the Siege of Querétaro or

were executed with the emperor. Like the

other European guards, the palace guard of

Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico was made up

entirely of officers, only the higher-ranking

officers were allowed to wear the officer

helmets while the lower ranks were issued a

simpler “trooper version”. The emperor is said

to have designed all uniform details during his

six week voyage to Mexico, in more than

600 pages, he specified the audience etiquette,

medal awards and the seating arrangement at

court dinners.
