A Greek Illyrian helmet, 2nd half of the
7th – 1st half of the
6th century B.C.
Bronze helmet of middle form (type II), the
skull distinctly delineated by the slight inden-
tation of the cheek pieces and neck guard.
Hammered in one piece. Straight face cutout,
the cheek guards extending forwards, with
perforations for the chinstrap. A cutout at the
back, from which the neck guard originates.
The outer border with round-headed rivets, se-
parated at the top by a raised strip, hammered
from the inside. Two more horizontal strips at
the top of the face cutout, with a central perfo-
ration to attach the hook (no longer in situ) for
the plume. A crest rail to fasten the plume run-
ning across the crown of the skull. Two holes
pierced in the middle of the neck guard, below
the plume rail, to attach an additional hook to
affix the plume. Dark green patina with layers
of oxide. Occasional, small cracks in the skull
and the neck guard have been reinforced from
inside. Overall, sound metal substance with no
significant defects or replacements. The skull
slightly distorted to the side. Height approx.
24 cm, depth approx. 28 cm.
