A distinguished Staufian double seal belonging to Friedericus
Palatinus, Count Palatine of Bavaria, circa 1156
The double-sided seal matrix carved in fine, yellowish-brown stone
(Solnhofen limestone?), with a slanting edge. The main side with a de-
piction of the German golden eagle, “+FRIDERICUS PALATINUS
COMES” inscribed around the edge. A stylised tree of life on the oppo-
site side. A double perforation in the upper edge. The edges knocked in
places. Diameter 6.5 cm
Friedrich II, Count Palatine of Wörth and Lengenfeld, Count of Kel-
heim, was the son of the Wittelsbach Count Palatine Otto I and beca-
me Count Palatine of Donauwörth in 1156. An important supporter
of the House of Staufen, he accompanied Frederick Barbarossa I on
his Italian Campaigns from 1154 onwards. With a reputation for being
fiery and entertaining countless feuds, he was banished for a time. He
travelled to Palestine several times, abdicated in 1195 and withdrew to
the monastery of Indersdorf, where he died in 1198.
