A North European Romanesque pewter candle
holder, 11th/12th century
Pricket candle holder on three feet made from
a heavily leaded pewter alloy. The base com-
posed of three sitting warrior figures with
Norman/Anglo-Saxon full-length mail shirts,
nasal helmets and aventails. Two figures with
raised swords, the third one with an axe. Sur-
mounting the group of figures a woman leading
a pinioned captive, holding a bird in her right
hand. The third figure is a man with a sword,
blowing a hunting horn. Slightly curved drip
pan with blossom-shaped decorations and
remnants of the iron pricket. Height 13 cm.
Candle holders of this type are proven by nu-
merous finds in the Netherlands, England,
North Germany and the whole Baltic Sea re-
gion, the production centres as yet unknown.
Another candle holder with a similar arrange-
ment of groups of figures is part of the collec-
tion at the Rijnsburg Cloister in South Holland.
