Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este –
a deluxe cavalry sword as proprietor of the
Royal Bavarian 2nd Schwere Reiter regiment
The curved Damascus blade with a gilt
Bavarian banner on both sides (tr.) “Stead-
fast in faith”, “Eisenhauer” and the manu
facturer’s mark “Joh. Stroblberger München”
on the back. The silver hilt decorated with
geometric designs in relief, the obverse guard
plate with the Bavarian coat of arms, that of
Austria on the reverse. Several details sub
sequently highlighted in gold lacquer. The
gilt, screw-on cap for use as a seal, engraved
with the crowned, reversed cipher “FF”. The
black horn grip with gold-coloured wire
winding, the crown of the appliquéd reversed
cipher “FF” in gold, set with rose-cut dia-
monds. Silver officer’s sword knot, the black
mourning sash enclosed. Black leather scab-
bard with en suite silver-plated iron fittings.
Length 99.5 cm.
Comes with a statement written by Prince
Joseph Clemens of Bavaria, dated 1980,
confirming that the sword was presented to
the Archduke by his uncle, Prince Ludwig
Ferdinand of Bavaria, and that he was able to
re-acquire it circa 1950.
