Ein Paar reich verzierter, schwerer Goldohrringe,

hellenistisch, 2. Hälfte 4. - 2. Jhdt. v. Chr.

Zwei identisch aufgebaute Ohrringe. Große Goldscheibe mit auf der

Rückseite angelötetem, langen Drahthaken zum Einhängen in das

Ohr. Außen in sechs konzentrischen Zonen angeordneter Dekor aus

unterschiedlichen Filigrandrähten (glatt, verzwirnt und spiralförmig

aufgerollt). In der Mitte eine sphärisch gewölbte Erhebung mit zent-

ralem, durch eine Zarge gefassten, kugeligen Cabochon aus dunkel-

blauem Glas, umgeben von Zierzone mit Spiralen und Ringlein aus

Filigrandrähten sowie Granalien. Am unteren Ende der Scheibe

drei Ringösen angelötet. In den beiden äußeren feingliedrige Fuchs-

schwanzketten eingehängt, die am unteren Ende auf Golddraht auf-

gefädelte Perlen aus dunkelblauem Glas tragen. An der mittleren Öse

hängt ein kegelförmiger Anhänger mit reicher Verzierung; oben ein

Fries aus Filigranspiralen und Granalien, unten eine breite Zone aus

spiralförmig, eng anliegend aufgerollten, verzwirnten Drähten.

Abgesehen von geringfügigen Sinterauflagen ausgezeichnet erhaltene

Prachtexemplare altgriechischer Ohrringe. Höhe je ca. 6 cm. Gewicht

13,42 und 14,21 g.

Provenienz: Süddeutscher Privatbesitz, in den 60er Jahren von jetzi-

ger Eigentümerin aus der Sammlung der Eltern übernommen, deren

Zusammenstellung maßgeblich vom Vater, einem Altphilologen, be-

stimmt war.

A pair of Hellenistic highly ornate, heavy gold earrings, 2nd half of the

4th – 2nd century B.C.

Two identically shaped earrings. Large gold disc with a long wire hook

soldered on the back to affix the earring in the ear. Decoration compo-

sed of varying filigree wires (smooth, twisted and coiled into a spiral)

arranged in six concentric zones on the outside. A spherically domed

protrusion in the middle, with a central, spherical cabochon of dark

blue glass in a bezel setting, surrounded by a decorative border with

spirals and circlets of filigree wire and globules. Three eyelets soldered

to the lower end of the disc. Delicate foxtail chains looped through the

two outer eyelets, the lower ends of the chains adorned with dark blue

glass beads threaded onto gold wire. A conical pendant with lavish em-

bellishment suspended from the middle eyelet; a frieze of filigree spirals

and globules at the top, a wide border of spiral, tightly coiled, twisted

wires at the bottom.

Apart fromminor sinter deposits, these ancient Greek earrings are mas-

terpieces in excellent condition. Height of each approx. 6 cm. Weight

13.42 and 14.21 g respectively.

rovenance

Private South German collection, inherited by the pre-

sent owner from her parents during the 1960s. The composition of the

collection was largely determined by her father, a classical scholar.
