Trotz oder gerade wegen der erheblichen Be-
schädigungen ein kulturhistorisch bedeuten-
des Objekt zur Geschichte des Buddhismus
in China.
A Chinese iron Buddha, circa 1600
Lotus-seated iron Buddha, holding his hands
in the position of the Anjali Mudra, mounted
on a base with a continuous figure frieze. Dis-
tinct traces of destruction and ensuing repairs.
Height 80 cm, weight 117 kg.
Iron Buddhas were frequently coated with
gold.
During the revolutionary upheavals of the
20th century, in particular in consequence
of the foundation of the communist People’s
Republic of China in 1949, the influence of
Buddhism was further repressed. In spite of
the establishment of the Buddhist Associa-
tion of China in 1953, which was initially to-
lerated by the state, the Cultural Revolution
proclaimed by Mao Zedong aimed directly at
the destruction of the remaining symbols and
organisations of China’s religious traditions.
Numerous monasteries were destroyed, of-
ficial practice of religion was largely forbid-
den, monks were forced out, arrested or killed.
In spite – or even because – of the massive da-
mage an object of cultural significance for the
history of Buddhism in China.
