Adolf (Constantin) Baumgartner-Stoiloff
(1850 - 1924) - Cossack attack in winter
Oil on canvas, signed on the lower right
“C. Stoiloff”. Wild, realistically painted
Cossack platoon under a cloudy sky in a
snowscape. In new profile frame. Dimension
of painting 82 x 130 cm, dimensions of frame
94 x 144 cm.
The skills of the painter become evident in the
nuanced shades of the snow and sky or in the
convincing spatial portrayal of the moving
figures with detailed clothes and weapons.
Adolf Baumgartner-Stoiloff was a Bulgarian
artist who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts
in St. Petersburg in the 1880s. Between 1890
and 1900, he became famous for his Russian
scenes with Cossacks and hunters, which were
also published in several European maga-
zines. Stoiloff had a couple of pseudonyms
and signed his paintings with “A. Baum-
gartner-Stoiloff”, “Stoiloff”, “Constantin
Stoiloff” or “C. Stoiloff”.
