Werkverzeichnis Illies Nr. 1131. Arthur Illies, Hamburger Kaufmannssohn, begann 1886 eine Lehre als Dekorationsmaler und belegte Akt- und Tierzeichenkurse. Ab 1889 studierte er an der Kgl. Kunstgewerbeschule und ab 1890 an der Kgl. Akademie der Bildenden Künste in München. 1908 wurde er Dozent an der Staatlichen Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg, wo er ab 1914 ein Atelier erhielt. Er galt als einer der herausragenden Grafiker der Jahrhundertwende. Obwohl vom Kriegsdienst befreit, begleitete er 1916 das Infanterie-Regiment „Hamburg“ (2. Hanseatisches) Nr. 76 an die Front nach Jablon und Pinsk und hielt das Regiment in Gemälden fest, die 1918 in der Aula der Hamburger Kunstgewerbeschule ausgestellt wurden. 1926 ernannte ihn der Hamburger Senat zum Professor und obwohl seine Entlassung als solcher nach der Machtergreifung für ihn eine große Enttäuschung darstellte, war er dennoch zwischen 1941 und 1944 mit sechs Gemälden auf der Großen Deutschen Kunstausstellung vertreten. The son of a Hamburg merchant, Arthur Illies began an apprenticeship as a decorator in 1886 and took classes on drawing nudes and animals. From 1889, he studied at the Royal School of Arts and Crafts and, from 1890, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1908, he became a lecturer at the State School of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg, where he was given a studio from 1914 onwards. He was considered one of the outstanding graphic artists of the turn of the century. Although exempt from military service, in 1916 he accompanied Infantry Regiment „Hamburg“ (2nd Hanseatic) No. 76 to the front in Jablon and Pinsk. He painted a series of pictures of the regiment that were exhibited in the Great Hall of the Hamburg School of Arts and Crafts in 1918. In 1926, the Hamburg Senate appointed him professor.
