A heavy South German or Swiss cavalry sabre with Stantler blade, 3rd quarter of the 16th century Slightly curved, single-edged blade with a double-edged point, shallow fullers on both sides, minor pitting here and there. The Malchus mark used by Munich sword cutler Christoph Stantler struck on the reverse. Iron hilt with traces of the original blackening. S-shaped, curved quillons with large fist protector on the obverse. A finger bar on the reverse, the thumb ring inserted in the hilt. The original grip fluted on the side, with copper and brass wire winding, plus fine Turk‘s heads. Iron pommel in the shape of a stylised bird‘s head with offset riveted button. An old collection number „78 in brass attached. Length 104 cm. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the Princes of Liechtenstein at Vaduz Castle, where it was acquired directly by Dr. B.
