Wilhelm Freiherr von Leonrod – A Grand Cross set of the Hessian Order of Philip in the presentation case The sash decoration worked in gold in the ele- gant, flat design of the award period shortly before the World War. The obverse medallion with a half-length portrait of Philip I the Mag- nanimous, forefather of the House of Hesse (1504 - 1567), embossed separately in gold, appliquéd and inscribed with the motto of the order “SI DEUS NOBISCUM QUIS CON- TRA NOS” (“If God be with us, who shall be against us?”). The rampant, crowned Hessian lion, striped crossways, in fine enamel paint- ing on the back, completely preserved, and surrounded by the motto “LUDOVICUS II MAGN. DUX HASSIAE INSTIT” (Institut- ed by Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse). Width 59.5 mm. Weight 30.2 g The eight-rayed breast star wrought in silver, on a pin. The medallion made of several pieces in gold, enamelled in white and opaque light blue. The star rays polished to a high shine. Width 82.5 mm. Weight 45 g. Together with the customised, worn order sash in watered silk moiré in the leather presenta- tion case, with (tr.) “Order of Philip, Grand Cross” embossed in gold, containing the print- ed wearing instructions (tr.) (“The order star for the Grand Cross … from the right shoulder …”) and an old family note (tr.) “Grand Cross of the Hessian Order of Philip”. A beautiful, immaculate order set, in the same condition as when it was awarded to Wilhelm Freiherr von Leonrod in 1914. 247781 I - € 4.000
