Der Nachlass Leonrod
88 | Wilhelm Freiherr von Leonrod – A Grand Cross set of the Baden Order of the Zähringer Lion in the presentation case, with outer box The exquisite Grand Cross wrought in two-coloured gold (red and yellow), the cross arms composed of segments of green glass paste, foiled on the reverse. The volute ornaments finely chased, the obverse medallion featuring the ruins of Zähringen castle, the ancestral seat of the House of Baden, in detailed enamel painting. The background of the translucent red reverse medallion with the lion rampant chiselled by hand, the red-gold cross arms highly polished on the reverse. On a red- gold circlip. Width 59.2 mm. Weight 48 g. The old order badge crafted with consummate gold workmanship. The early, flat, eight-rayed breast star wrought in silver, on a wide pin and with the manufacturer’s circular signet “JOS: ZUBER HOF: JUWELIER”. The medallion appliqués rendered in gold, the trans lucent red background of the centre chiselled by hand (later guilloche machine or embossed). Width 86.7 mm. Weight 54.2 g. A beautiful, elegant breast star, circa 1870. Together with the original-length, customised and worn sash of watered silk moiré in the dark leather presentation case, embossed in gold with two reversed “F” from the reign of Frederick II, Grand Duke of Baden as of 1907, with the wearing instructions (tr.) “from... the right shoulder …” pasted inside. Includes the blue outer box, addressed to (tr.) “His Excellency the Royal Chamberlain Mr Wilhelm von Leonrod” and inscribed (tr.): “Grand Cross of the Grand Duchy of Baden’s Order of the Zähringer Lion”. Owing to the consistent embossing structure of the lions on the sash decoration and the breast star, it may be assumed that this is an older order set, which was made in its entirety by Joseph Zuber of Karlsruhe, court jeweller as of 1858. As the predecessor of Ludwig Paar, Joseph Zuber produced the order decorations for the German medal office until circa 1877. Splendid Grand Cross set, awarded to Wilhelm Freiherr von Leonrod in 1914. Extraordinarily appealing and absolutely complete, including the outer box. 247777 I - II € 6.000
