Born in Steinheim near Hanau on 6 April 1774, Karl Ludwig Freiherr von Leonrod stud- ied law in Wetzlar and Heidelberg, became a councillor in Amberg in 1795, entered Prus- sian service as an articled clerk in 1797 and was made director of the municipal court of Dinkelsbühl in 1804, subsequently Nurem- berg. A member of Bavaria’s chamber of dep- uties since 1825 (rising to second president in 1827), he was appointed (tr.) “Imperial Coun- cillor to the Bavarian Crown” during his life- time in 1828 and became chairman of Ans- bach Court of Appeal in 1833. As state councillor (Dr. jur. h. c. Eichstädt), in 1843, he served as Bavarian, Baden and Prussian chamberlain. He died in Nuremberg on 2 Jan- uary 1859. He married his third wife, Rosina Freiin von Stengel, in 1808 and was the father of the later justice minister Leopold von Leon- rod (1829 – 1905) and Generalleutnant Karl Freiherr von Leonrod (1814 – 1905), and the grandfather of Obersthofmeister Wilhelm Freiherr von Leonrod (1865 – 1943), whose decorations are described in the following. 247748 I - II € 1.200 1006 Ludwig Freiherr von Leonrod – Großherzoglich Badischer Kammerherren- schlüssel Aus vergoldetem Messing nachziseliert und feuervergoldet gefertigter Schlüssel aus der Regierungszeit des Großherzogs Carl von 1811 bis 1818. Länge 14,8 cm. Auf hellblauer Seidenrips-Schleife ver- näht, und mit alter Familien-Notiz: „Badi- scher Kammerherrenschlüssel des Karl Lud- wig Frhrn. v. Leonrod” versehen, im roten (eine Schließe defekt) Verleihungsetui. Außerordentlich schöner und aufgrund des kurzen Verleihungszeitraums sehr seltener Kammerherrenschlüssel, komplett mit Band- schleife und Etui besonders reizvoll! Length 14.8 cm. Stitched onto a light blue, ribbed silk bow and together with an old family note (tr.) “Baden chamberlain’s key belonging to Karl Ludwig Frhr. v. Leonrod”, in the red presentation case (one clasp broken). This exceptionally beautiful chamberlain’s key is extremely rare as it was only conferred during a brief period.
