Der ursprünglich 1884 inMecklenburg-Schwerin gestiftete Orden wur- de ab 1904 von den Herzögen Friedrich Franz IV. von Mecklenburg- Schwerin (1882 – 1945) und Adolf Friedrich von Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1848 - 1914) auch gemeinschaftlich verliehen. Wilhelm Freiherr von Leonrod – A Grand Cross set of the Mecklen- burg-Schwerin Order of the Griffon The sash decoration made of gilt silver with translucent red enamel (a chip in the lower obverse cross arm), the background chiselled by hand, the griffon appliquéd separately in the medallion and chased, the medallion pinned. Width 67 mm. Weight 39.9 g. The eight-rayed breast star worked in silver by the manufacturer “H. ROSE SCHWERIN”, with alternating convex and concave star rays, modelled on Russian orders, on a broad pin. Gilt medallion, the griffon and the order motto “ALTIOR ADVERSIS” (Against All Odds) chased and enamelled in translucent red. Width 85 mm. Weight 69.2 g. Together with the customised and worn sash in the presentation case (the lid somewhat warped) with the gold-embossed, intertwined mono- gram “FF” (for Friedrich Franz, Schwerin award) and the old wearer note (tr.): “Cross of Honour [deleted] Grand Cross [inserted] of the Mecklenburg Order of the Griffon”. Originally instituted in Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1884, the order was also jointly awarded by the Dukes Friedrich Franz IV von Mecklen- burg-Schwerin (1882 – 1945) and Adolf Friedrich von Mecklen- burg-Strelitz (1848 - 1914) after 1904. 247787 II € 2.500 1060
