| 7 Los 771 Grabstele, Fragment, Griechenland, 1. Hälfte - Mitte 6. Jhdt. v. Chr. Mehr als 2500 Jahre schauen auf uns herab, wenn wir das Gesicht dieses jungen Mannes betrachten. Einst stand diese Stele vermutlich auf seinem Grab und zeigte ihn in der Blü- te seiner Jugend. Auch wenn es sich hier nur um einen Teil der Stele handelt, kann man immer noch den Speer sehen, auf den er sich stützt und der seinen Rang als Krieger oder Athlet unterstreicht. In ihrer strengen, im Profil gehaltenen Darstellung ist diese Stele typisch für die griechische Archa- ik und zeigt, wie künstlerisch eindrucksvoll und geradezu ehrfurchtgebietend auch heute, selbst nach über zwei Tau- send Jahren, solche Stücke sind. Reste der roten Farbfassung, welche dieses Monument noch eindrucksvoller in seiner Zeit wohl aussehen ließen, sind erhalten und lassen erahnen, was für eine Wirkung es auf die Menschen des alten Griechen- lands sicher entfaltete. Lot 771 A Greek archaic funerary stele of a warrior, 1st half - mid-6th century B.C. Looking at the face of this young man means looking back in time for more than 2500 years. It is most likely that the stele this fragment belonged to once honoured this warrior’s grave. A part of the lance shaft below the chin has survived, indi- cating the young man’s role as a spear bearer (doryphoros). The motionless pose in profile is typical of the Greek Archaic period, as is the frontal representation of the almond-shaped eye. This artistic style still leaves a lasting impression on the observer. Our fragment shows remnants of a reddish coloured back- ground and is comparable to a similar, probably slightly younger stele in the National Museum of Athens (7901).
