Chr. auch Ringknauf- schwerter zu deren Ausrüstung. Allerdings sind Ringknauf- schwerter weitaus seltener. Das hier angebotene Stück ist also eine doppelte Rarität, denn es ist auch noch dazu in einem ausgezeichneten Zustand, wie man ihn für gewöhnlich nur in wenigen Museen bewundern kann. Die aufwendige Konstruktionsweise und die feine Struktur des Damaststahls, aus dem die Klinge hergestellt wurde, sind ein Zeugnis der hoch entwickelten Handwerkskunst der Schmiede im RömischenWeltreich. Lot 799 A Roman ring pommel sword, 1st half of the 3rd century Roman legionnaires used quite a variety of swords over the centuries, most of which bear names indicating their origin, such as the Gladius Hispaniensis, the Mainz Sword or the Pom- peii Sword. Ring pommel swords, however, derived their name from the unique shape of the pommel. This type of sword was part of the Roman armament in the 1st half of the 3rd century. However, ring pommel swords appear to have not been fre- quently used and are extremely hard to come by, a true rar- ity. What makes this particular sword even rarer is its excel- lent state of preservation. The blade of damascus steel is still in good shape, the solid iron crossguard leads to the grip tang, to which the massive ring pommel is attached by bending and riveting the tang.
