So man- cher Kalligraph machte das Streben nach Perfektion in dieser Kunst zu seiner Lebensaufgabe. Um aber Perfektion zu erreichen, brauchte der Kalligraph auch das richtige Material und vor allem das richtigeWerkzeug, Bun- bu shiho ( 文房四宝 ): Pinsel, Papier, Tinte und Reibstein. Von diesen “vier Schätzen des Shodo” sind Pinsel unverzichtbar und unersätzlich, hochwertige Pinsel in allen möglichen Stärken. Nach getanem Werk mussten diese Pinsel (Fude 筆) gründlich gereinigt und danach getrocknet werden, damit sie ihre Eigen- schaften behielten. Genau zu diesem Zweck wurde dieses Gefäß aus einem kräfti- gen Stück eines Elefantenstoßzahnes geschaffen und mit einem wundervollen Dekor aus vielen Schichten aus Goldlack ver- ziert. So erfüllte dieses Pinselaufbewahrungsgefäß nicht nur seinen Zweck, es erfreute auch das Auge des Kalligraphen und eines jeden Kunstkenners. But to get even close to perfection, you need not only the right mindset and advanced skills, but also the proper tools, Bunbu shiho ( 文房四宝 ): the brush, the paper, the ink, and the ink- stone. Of these “four treasures of shodo”, brushes are indispen- sable and irreplaceable, and they need to be taken care of to achieve the best results and maintain them. To store and dry valuable brushes, or Fude ( 筆) in Japanese, this vessel was carved from a large piece of an elephant’s tusk, 25 cm high, and artfully decorated with birds, flowers and scrolls. It rests on a wooden base and is an absolute pleasure, not only for your Fude, but also for the eye!
