Zwischen vergoldeten Ornamenten, sog. „Laufenden Hunden“, finden sich Medail- lons mit Symbolen des christlichen Glaubens – neben dem „Chi-Ro“ für Christus sieht man dort auch Darstellungen des Lamm Gottes sowie von Pfauen. Diese waren im früh- christlichen Glauben keineswegs Symbole der Eitelkeit, son- dern Vögel des Paradieses, deren Fleisch nie verwest und die deshalb auch für die Auferstehung und die Unsterblichkeit der Seele standen. Abgesehen von diesem beeindruckenden Bildprogramm sehen wir hier ein Meisterstück byzantinischer Metallkunst vor uns. Lot 731 A rare, early Christian partially gilded silver vase, 5th - 6th century This large, 30 cm high silver vase of high artistic quality, is just another highlight of the autumn 2021 auction.With large and small medallions interconnected centrally around the body, the vase is covered in symbols of early Christian tradi- tion, crosses, the Chi-Rho (with Alpha and Omega), a sheep and a peacock. The Chi-Rho was the major and widely used Christian symbol from the 4th century onwards. The sheep possibly refers to Jesus, the “agnus dei”. In early Christian times, the peacock still had a positive connotation: it was con- sidered a bird of paradise and a symbol of heaven, bliss and happiness. The view was widespread that its flesh would not decay, and so it symbolised resurrection and immortality. In its entirety, this vase is an absolute masterpiece of Byzan- tine silver-smithing!
