Dieses hier hingegen stammt aus dem Kaukasus, und der exotisch klingende Name „Schaschka“ bedeutet auf tscher- kessisch nichts anderes als „Langes Messer“. Von dort fand die Schaschka ihrenWeg zu den Kosaken, wo sie bis zum heutigen Tag im Einsatz ist. Dieses ausgezeichnete, aufwendig und in bester Qualität ge- fertigte, 101 cm lange Exemplar wurde wohl für einen hoch- stehenden Herrn angefertigt. Die fein geätzte Klinge zeigt die Zarenchiffre von Nikolaus II., den zaristischen Doppeladler und eine Reiterkampfszene. Gefäß und Scheidenbeschläge in Niellotechnik aufwendig verziert, die Beschläge mit der Feingehaltspunze für 84 zolotniki versehen. Die Meistermar- ke „Гузунов“ weist die Schaschka als Produkt des bekannten Gold- und Silberschmieds Guzunov aus Dagestan aus, der dort vom Ende des 19. Jhdts bis 1923 nachgewiesen ist. This example is Caucasian, and its beautifully sounding exotic name “Shashka” simply means “long knife” in Circassian. When the Cossacks came across this arm, they adopted it as their own sidearm, which it has re- mained to this day. This excellent, 101 cm long sword was apparently made in the best quality possible for a high-ranking gentleman of the no- bility or the military. The finely etched blade shows the cipher of Tsar Nicholas II, the tsarist double eagle and a cavalry bat- tle scene. The hilt and the silver mounts of the leather-covered scabbard are elaborately decorated in niello, the mounts bear- ing the hallmark for 84 zolotniki. The Cyrillic maker’s mark “Гузунов” points to a famous gold and silver smith from Dagestan, Guzunov. He operated his workshop from the late 19th century until 1923. | 35
