Das beindruckende Jadebeil, das wir Ih- nen in unserer Auktion anbieten dürfen, vereint in sich die Darstellung eines Drachens sowie stark abstrahierte Dekor- elemente. Außerdem trägt die Vorderseite der Klinge eine Reihe von fünf Schriftzeichen, die auch heute noch der Wis- senschaft Rätsel aufgeben. Ein Jahrtausende altes Enigma der Wissenschaft und ein Objekt von höchster Ästhetik und Kunstfertigkeit einer neolithischen Hochkultur. Lot 512 A large Chinese jade ritual axe with inscription, probably Hongshan culture The origins of the Neolithic Hongshan culture date back as far as 7000 B.C., while it ended in the 3rd millenium B.C. This impressively large (34 x 16 cm, weighing 2.25 kg !) ceremonial axe made of dark green jade displays the head of a dragon touching with its snout a highly abstracted fig- ure consisting of a centrally pierced triangle and circle, and a column with five characters. While such characters are repeatedly found on objects from the Hongshan culture, science has not yet managed to decipher them. Apart from these enigmatic characters, this axe bears wit- ness to the developed aesthetics and skilful craftsmanship of this Neolithic period.
