Bereits in römischer Zeit sollten der Herrscher und die wichti- gen Mitglieder seines Hauses auch bildlich in allen Teilen des Reiches präsent sein. Auf einfache Weise konnte die bildliche Kommunikation des Herrschers mit den Bewohnern des Rei- ches etwa durch Münzbildnisse hergestellt werden. Richtig zur Geltung aber kamen Kaiserbildnisse, wenn sie lebensgroß und aus kostbarem Material gefertigt waren. Sie gehörten dann zur Ausstattung beispielsweise von Tempeln oder städtischen Foren. So auch ein exzellent gearbeitetes, durch seine Aus- drucksstärke einnehmendes Marmorporträt des Kaisers Ca- racalla (198-217 n. Chr.). Es stammt aus alter Sammlung und ist auch als Mellerio-Kopf bekannt und publiziert. Es zeigt den jugendlichen Herrscher, als er noch Mitkaiser seines Vaters Septimius Severus war.
