Los 166 Marienschrein aus Elfenbein, portugiesisch- kolonial, um 1720 Ein bezauberndes Zeugnis der Vermischung europäischer und indischer Formenwelten zeigt diese filigrane Elfenbeinarbeit, die vermutlich in der portugiesischen Kolonie Goa gefertigt wurde. Im Zentrum der Komposition steht die Muttergottes auf Mond- sichel und Schlange, umgeben von einem reichen Reigen aus En- geln mit Palmzweigen und exotischen bunten Vögeln. Davor be- findet sich die Figur eines Pelikans als Symbol für den Opfertod Christi, ein Thema, das erneut in der Bekrönung des Gesprenges aufgenommen wird, auf dem die Arma Christi präsentiert wer- den. Trotz des ernsten Themas überwiegen bei der Darstellung die heiteren Elemente, bei denen die zahlreichen fröhlichen, teils farbig staffierten Putti und Vögel dominieren. Die Elfenbeinarbeiten sind auf einem imposanten originalen Sockel aus stuckiertem und vergoldetem Holz montiert, der ihnen die Wirkung eines barocken Bühnenbildes gibt. Lot 166 A Portuguese Colonial shrine of the Virgin Mary in ivory, circa 1720 This delicate ivory piece, which was probably made in the Portu- guese colony of Goa, is an enchanting testimony to the mix of prevalent European and Indian styles. The centre of the composition shows the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon and serpent, surrounded by a host of angels with palm leaves and exotic, colourful birds. The figure of a pelican in the foreground is a symbol of the Passion of Christ, which theme is repeated in the finial of the superstructure, on which the Arma Christi are presented. The grave theme is overshadowed in the representation by the light-hearted elements, predominantly the numerous carefree putti and birds, some painted in colour. The ivory carvings are mounted on the imposing, original pedestal of stucco, gilt wood, which gives the effect of a baroque backdrop.
