Er wurde am 19. Mai 1802 von Napoleon Bonaparte, da- mals noch Erster Konsul, in der Absicht gestiftet, militärische und zivile Verdienste, ausgezeichnete Talente und große Tugenden zu belohnen. Eine Besonderheit, ganz dem damaligen Zeitgeist verpflichtet, war, dass kein Staatsbürger aufgrund seiner Geburt, seines Standes oder seines Religionsbekenntnisses von diesem Orden ausgeschlossen werden konnte. Die Ehrenlegion ist die ranghöchste Auszeichnung Frankreichs. An der Zivilkleidung wird die Miniatur je nach Rang als rotes Band oder als rote Ro- sette im Knopfloch getragen. Der angebotene Orden verkörpert eine zwar spät gefertigte, aber hohe Verleihungsstufe. Außerdem schmückt ein Kranz aus Diamanten das Medaillon. Ebenfalls akzentuieren einzelne Diamanten die Spitzen der Kreuzarme und verleihen dem Ganzen so eine besondere Ausstrahlung.
