Edward Bates, der unter anderem von 1763 bis 1768 als Büchsen- macher in der Brounlow Street in London arbeitete, schuf eine Pistole, die äußerlich einer herkömmlichen Steinschlosspistole aufs Haar gleicht, innerlich aber eine für ihre Zeit hochmoderne Luftdruckpistole ist. Und weil er somit in vollendeter Weise die klassische Form der Steinschlosspistole mit der Technik einer Windpistole zu vereinen wusste, ist es kein Wunder, dass seine Waffen auch heute noch geschätzt werden und auf internatio- nalen Auktionen höchste Preise erzielen. Air guns, or, as in our case, air pistols, were not mere playthings or cabinet pieces by any stretch of the imagination, but high-precision – and occasionally lethal – weapons. Edward Bates, who worked as a gunmaker in London’s Brounlow Street from 1763 to 1768, came up with a pistol that looked exactly like a conventional flintlock pistol on the outside, but was actually a, for the time, state-of-the-art air pistol on the inside.And because he was a master in combining the classical lines of the flintlock pistol with the technology of an air pistol to perfection, it is hard- ly surprising that his weapons are still sought-after to this day, fetching top prices at international auctions.
