| 63 Los 4229 Kaiserin Elisabeth von Österreich - silberge- fasster Kokosnusspokal, Geschenk von König Ludwig II. von Bayern Ein Kabinettstück als Fürstengeschenk - das gab es auch im 19. Jahrhundert, wie das hier vorgestellte Unikat beweist. Ursprüng- lich waren Kunstkammer-Pokale mit einer Kokosnuss-Kuppa im 16. Jahrhundert beliebt. Wie bei diesen kontrastiert an unserem Gefäß die raue Schale der exotischen Kokosnuss wirkungsvoll zur aufwendigen Handwerksarbeit der Silberfassung. Diese gab König Ludwig II. zwischen 1864 und 1886 beim bayerischen Sil- berschmied Wollenweber in Auftrag. Zum „Königlich bayerischen Hoflieferanten“ ernannten die Regenten zwischen 1806 und 1918 nur eine kleine Elite. Elisabeth und Ludwig verband beide ihre bayerische Herkunft. Ludwig II. lernte seine Cousine Elisabeth, eine geborene Herzogin in Bayern, 1864 in Bad Kissingen kennen. Sie war 26, er 18 Jahre alt. Sie verstanden sich sofort so gut, dass aus Ludwigs geplantem Aufenthalt von zwei Tagen vier Wochen wurden. Danach blieben sie einander lebenslang in Freundschaft verbunden, wovon dieser edle Pokal zeugt. Lot 4229 Empress Elisabeth of Austria – a silver-mounted coconut trophy, presented by Ludwig II of Bavaria A prince’s gift as a cabinet piece – this unique object is testimony to the fact that they were still in existence in the 19th century. Kunstkammer trophies with a coconut bowl were popular in the 16th century. Just like these, the rough shell of the exotic coconut on our receptacle contrasts effectively with the elaborate craftsman- ship of the silver mounting. The Bavarian silversmith Wollenweber received the commission from King Ludwig II between 1864 and 1886. Between 1806 and 1918, the regents only appointed a small elite as (tr.) “Purveyors to the Royal Bavarian court”. Elisabeth and Ludwig had a common link in their Bavarian roots. In 1864, Lud- wig II made the acquaintance of his cousin Elisabeth, a Duchess in Bavaria, at Bad Kissingen. She was 26 and he was 18 years of age. They got on so famously from the outset that Ludwig extended his stay from two days to four weeks. They remained connected by ties of deep friendship throughout their lives, as this noble trophy attests.
