| 17 Los 3909 Private Machol - Medal of Honor, verliehen am 12. April 1875 Als höchste militärische Auszeichnung der US-Regierung wird die Medal of Honor nur bei Tapferkeit verliehen, die weit über die Pflichterfüllung hinausgeht, das heißt für die Be- wältigung dramatischer Gefechtssituationen unter Lebensge- fahr. Deshalb sind trotz mehrerer Kriege seit Stiftung dieser Ehrenmedaille 1861 nur ca. 3.500Verleihungen bekannt. Die- se Auszeichnung, die ohne britisches Vorbild auskam, wurde am 21. Dezember 1861 eingeführt, genehmigt durchAbraham Lincoln. Die erste militärische Aktion, die eine Verleihung zur Folge hatte, ereignete sich im Stiftungsjahr: Colonel Bernard John Dowling Irwin besiegte am 13. Februar 1861 mit lediglich 14 Mann eine Übermacht von Indianern und befreite noch 60 gefangene Kameraden. Auch Heldenmut von Sanitätern auf dem Schlachtfeld wurde mit dieser Me- daille geehrt. Das hier angebotene Exemplar erhielt Private Machol am 12. April 1875 als einer von zehn Indian Scouts für seine Teilnahme am Winterfeldzug von Lieutenant Co- lonel George Crook 1872/73 gegen aufständische Apachen in Arizona. Lot 3909 Private Machol – a Medal of Honor, awarded to the Indian Scout on 12 April 1875 The US government’s highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor is only awarded for bravery that extends far beyond the discharge of duties, in other words, to individuals who have risked their lives in dramatic combat situations.Therefore, this medal of honor has been awarded a mere 3,500 times since it was established in 1861, several wars notwithstanding. With the approval of Abraham Lincoln, the decoration was intro- duced on 21 December 1861 and was not modelled on any British insignia. The first military action that resulted in the medal being awarded took place in the year it was established: on 13 February 1861, backed by just 14 men, Colonel Bernard John Dowling Irwin defeated a superior army of Indians to release another 60 comrades, who were being held prisoner. The medal was also awarded to acknowledge the heroism of medical orderlies on the battlefield. This one was presented to Private Machol, one of ten Indian Scouts, on 12 April 1875 for his contribution to the winter campaign against insurgent Apaches inArizona, led by Lieutenant Colonel George Crook in 1872/73.
