| 37 A distinguished South German lavishly bone-inlaid wheellock rifle with self-spanning lock from the armoury of the Counts of Oettingen, circa 1600 The octagonal barrel slightly constricted in the middle with eight-groove rifled bore in 14 mm calibre. Dovetailed sights. The coat of arms of the Counts of Oettingen chiselled at the breech. Unidentified eagle mark (Nördlingen?) struck at the root of the barrel. Brass-lined vent hole. The lock with semi-internal wheel, the cover plate with trefoil piercing. Elaborate rack mechanism, allowing the wheel to be placed in the firing position by moving the cock. Set trigger. The ebonised walnut full stock with extremely elaborate, delicate inlays of engraved and blackened bone. Depiction of mythological figures, fabulous creatures and animals amidst scrollwork and trophy cartouches. The interspaces decorated with fine inlays of shavings and blossoms.
