98 | A German flintlock rifle by Philipp Daniel Dargent, Ludwigsburg, circa 1760 Grooved octagonal barrel in 15 mm calibre, bore somewhat rough with good rifling, the upper side near the muzzle and breech gilt and richly decorated with flower ornaments, at the breech the Württemberg coat-of-arms in gold (later?), burnishing of the barrel possibly contemporary. Flintlock gilt and cut en suite, on the lock plate gilt banner with signature. Set trigger. Finely carved full stock with gilt and engraved furniture decorated in relief with rocailles, flower ornaments and hunting scenes. Wooden ramrod with brass tip. Length 119 cm. Elegant rifle of extraordinarily high-quality workmanship. Philipp Daniel Dargent (1690 – 1791) was gunsmith to the court from 1729 onwards and successor of Tobias Renner (cf.
