Two mirror-symmetric kline fittings of otherwise similar design, which decorated the front of the curved backrests (fulcra) at the ends of a kline. Below, within a round “medallion”, the bust of a satyr with point- ed ears, bulging eyebrows and snub nose. Below the ears, bobbles on the neck. The strong hair on the head is combed back. A goat skin is wrapped around the shoulders and knotted on the chest. In the angled central section, slightly offset inwards from the edge, a curved frame with a rapport of closely set angles with curled ends. In it a vine with leaves, grapes and tendrils, also worked out in low relief. At the upper, rounded end a detailed leopard’s head with open mouth. In front of it a leopard skin with spots marked by punches. The surfaces of the goat- skin, frame and vine as well as the leopard skin gilded. The three picture surfaces worked separately and soldered onto a complicated bar con- struction with a wide rim bent at right angles. In this wide rim, ten fine holes were made at regular intervals, with which the fittings were fas- tened with fine nails on the fronts of the two backrests. Impressively crafted fittings of a luxurious piece of furniture whose Dionysian motifs fit well with a symposium in a distinguished house- hold. They may be regarded as exemplary of the lifestyle of members of the Roman upper class. Apart from minimal chips and small cracks of the undecorated rim in excellent condition.
