| 325 A carved North German Renaissance oak chest, late 16th century The rectangular body made from oak in frame construction. The lid with bevelled edges. A de­ licately carved depiction of the Judgement of Solomon in three-quarter relief on the front. In the centre, the Biblical king sits under a canopy; a man-at-arms to his right holding the child aloft, next to the true mother, pleading for the baby’s life to be spared. On the left, the false mother with her entourage. The inscription “De Koning Salemon sin erte Gerichte - sat ein even Ordel gebe” around the edge. Two herm pillars with escutcheons at the side. Original coloured paint. Two movable iron handles at the side. Original iron lock with a hollow shank key. Tinned hinge straps, an inner drawer on the side.
