| 111 low a crown on the front of the lid, brass clasps and lock (no key). The two leather lashing straps are torn or have been lost. The dispatch note on the side reads “Gödöllö - München” and “Hotel Lucerne”. The inner walls covered in sand-coloured linen (flawed/stained), a red leath- er inner pocket in the lid. Two inset etageres, also covered in sand-coloured linen, containing two 4137 short blouses, a lady’s waistcoat, a skirt, two hats, a picnic basket (?), a blanket and much more. Dimensions of the portman- teau approx. 90 x 56 x 73 cm. P rovenance : Hermann Historica, 27th Auction in October 1992, lot 2864. There- after in a private German collection. It is not clear whether all pieces of laundry in the portmanteau actually belonged to the Empress. It is more likely that the items were hastily thrown into the Empress’ original port- manteau during the hurried and chaotic clear- ance of the royal palace at the end of World War I and dispatched to Munich, probably to her daughter Gisela. 280417 II - € 2.000
