5 | O ur auction, “From castles and palaces” has just one aspiration: to celebrate art in all its manifestations, from paintings to sculptures and deluxe weapons, every genre from applied to per- forming, decorative and complementary art. It has to be beautiful and timeless, above all first class. But modern; no, it is not modern. In this respect, we agree with Egon Schiele. “Art cannot be modern. Art is primordially eternal”. And so we work our way through the millennia, from classical antiquity to the Middle Ages and the modern era, taking in the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism along the way. In cooperation with our partner, Ehrl Fine Art and Antiques, the recognised expert for deco- rative art and design, we have put together an ex- quisite array of superlative works from all these eras, which we are delighted to now be able to pres- ent in the sumptuous rooms of Castle Greding. Everywhere you look, everything that meets your eye, is imbued with art; every single utilitarian ob- ject is the antithesis of modern production theory, which holds that form must follow function. Far from it! Here, weapons are quintessential master- pieces, completely wasted on the art of warfare – the Rolex of the early modern period, if you will. Our cabinets and escritoires are three-dimensional sculptures with drawers in which to keep your thoughts. Secular paintings and tapestries are in harmony with sacred figures and altars. Books of- fer the (incomplete) knowledge of the days before the Enlightenment and jewellery reflects the osten- tatious pageantry of pre-Christian aristocracy.
