Äußerst prunkvoll gestalteter Silberteller, aus einer Platte ge- schmiedet und getrieben, dessenRund eine dramatische Tier- kampfszene ziert: ein Raubtier - wohl eine Löwin - reißt ein Wildschwein. Bei den imProfil dargestelltenKörpern handelt es sich um in der Technik der Treibziselierung herausgearbei- tetem ausdrucksstarken Reliefdekor. Zusätzlich zur Vergol- dung zeichnen sich die Tiere durch eine beeindruckend feine Punzierung und Gravierung des Fells aus. Der verbliebene Hintergrund ist undekoriert. Eingefasst ist die Szene durch den steilenRand, der innen durch ein vergoldetes Rautenband und ein reduziertes Pflanzenmotiv dekoriert ist. Das Blech ist sorgfältig nach außen umgebördelt. Der Teller steht in der Tradition awarischer Metallarbeiten, wie sie etwa aus dem prunkvollen Schatzfund von Nagyszent- miklós bekannt sind. Rückseitig sindmehrere feine, durch die Treibarbeit verursachteHaarrisse zu sehen, von denen jedoch nur einer bis zur Innenseite durchgebrochen ist (mit einer Länge von 2 cm imBereich des Halses des Raubtieres). Ferner eine minimale antike Verstärkung imRandbereich der Rück- seite, sonst intakt. Durchmesser 24,5 - 25 cm. Gewicht 528 g. Außergewöhnlich seltenes und den Betrachter ergreifendes Motiv! A rare Avaric, partly gilt silver plate with animal fighting scene, Pannonia, circa 8th century Extremely opulent silver plate, forged and chased from a plaque. The well is adorned with a dramatic scene of animals fighting: a predator, probably a lioness, killing a wild boar. The bodies depicted in profile in the chased repoussé tech- nique, the figures emerging expressively from the flat surface in relief. In addition to the gilding, the animals are embellished with impressively fine punching and engraving to denote their fur. The background is undecorated. The scene is framed by the steep lip, which is decorated on the inside with a gilt dia- mond band and a reduced plant motif. The metal sheet is care- fully turned outwards. The plate follows in the tradition of Avaric metalwork, as known for instance from the magnificent treasure find of Nagyszentmiklós. Several fine hairline cracks caused by the chasing can be seen on the reverse but only one of them has broken through to the inside (over a length of 2 cm in the area of the neck of the predator). Furthermore, a minimal antique reinforcement in the edge area of the back, otherwise intact. Diameter 24.5 - 25 cm. Weight 528 g. Exceptionally rare plate with a captivating motif.
