184 | A significant South German wheellock rifle, veneered in bone, with etched lock and barrel, circa 1600 The octagonal barrel slightly constricted in the middle with eight-groove rifled bore in 14 mm calibre. The top of the barrel lavishly etched with gilt scrolling bands and decorative ten- drils. Dovetailed sights in iron, the master’s monogram “TP” struck twice at the breech. The lock with external wheel, en- tirely covered in etched, gilt interlaced strapwork. Gilt set trig- ger. The full stock made of walnut with lavish inlays of black- ened and engraved bone. Renaissance cartouches with profuse strapwork and scrolling bands amidst mascarons and dainty landscape vistas. Interspersed with fine shavings. A depiction of a hunter in contemporary dress, armed with a wheellock rifle, on the patch box lid. Iron trigger guard with etched décor. Inset ramrod with screw-mounted iron bullet mould and engraved bone tip. Length 114 cm. 273570 II + € 30.000
