A German breastplate for a man-at-arms with later etched décor, circa 1510 Distinctly domed breastplate, the sweeping flange on the upper edge struck inwards at an angle. Movable, articulated arm-gussets with an- gular flanges and original buckle straps. Two attached faulds with later straps to fasten the tassets. Profuse decorative historicism etching in Italian style. Three linear ornaments with floral décor and a central escutcheon, surmounted by a Latin inscription for protection “(os) non chominuetis ex eo” (A bone of him shall not be broken, John 19:36). Above this a depiction of the Virgin Mary, flanked by St. Bernard of Clairvaux and St. Anthony of Padua. Height 39 cm. The etching on the breastplate is very similar to that on a Milanese breastplate in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, dated circa 1510, after which this was presumably modelled. The coat of arms may perhaps be identified as that of the Monticola family of Mantua. 270278 II € 2.400 4234 Knechtische Harnischbrust mit späterem Ätzdekor, deutsch, um 1510 Kräftig gewölbte Brustplatte, an der Oberkante kantig nach innen umgeschlagener, weit ausladender Brechrand. Beweglich geschobe- ne Armeinsätze mit kantigen Brechrändern und originalen Riemen- schnallen. Zwei anhängende Baureifen mit späteren Riemen zur Be- festigung der Tassetten. Ganzflächige Zierätzung des Historismus im italienischen Stil. Drei Zierstreifen mit floralem Dekor und zentralem Wappenschild, darüber lateinische Schutzinschrift „(os) non chomi- nuetis ex eo“ (nicht ein Knochen soll ihm gebrochen werden, Lukas 19:36). Darüber Darstellung Mariens, flankiert vomHl. Bernhard und dem Hl. Antonius von Padua. Höhe 39 cm. Die Ätzung der Brustplatte ist in sehr ähnlicher Form auf einer um 1510 datierten milanesischen Brustplatte im Philadelphia Museum of Art zu finden, die hier wohl als Vorbild diente. Das abgebildete Wappen kann eventuell der Familie Monticola in Mantua zugeordnet werden. 176 | 4234
