Die Medal of Honor wurde als höchste Tapferkeitsauszeichnung 1861 durch Präsident Abraham Lincoln während des Sezessionskrieges ein- geführt und bis heute in ca. 3.500 Fällen zuerkannt. Der in Irland geborene und 1920 in New York verstorbene Thomas Kelly nahm in der H-Kompanie des 21st Infantry Regiments an dem am 22. Juni 1898 beginnenden Angriff gegen die spanischen Truppen in Santiago auf Kuba teil. Am 1. Juli war das Regiment an der Erobe- rung des San Juan Hügels beteiligt, wobei sich Private Kelly durch die Rettung zahlreicher Verwundeter aus vorderster Front und im schweren Feindbeschuss auszeichnete („Private Kelly assisted in the rescue of the wounded from in front of the line and while under heavy fire from the enemy”).
