After 1811 director of the Imperial Public Library in St. Petersburg. 1795 colonel, from 1807 to 1808 he served as general. As a secretary of state, A. N. Olenin played a major part in the work of the Russian state apparatus and took part in numerous signifi- cant events on behalf of the state. In the history of Russian culture the famous Olenin salon, where distinguished scientists and artists came together, played a significant part. A. S.
