Olenin. A. N. Olenin, renowned historian, archaeologist, artist, secretary of state (1814 – 1827), later member of the State Council. Privy councillor. Honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Science (1809), member (since 1804) and from 1817 onwards president of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. After 1811 director of the Imperial Public Library in St. Petersburg. 1795 colonel, from 1807 to 1808 he served as general. As a secretary of state, A. N. Olenin played a major part in the work of the Russian state apparatus and took part in numerous signifi- cant events on behalf of the state. In the history of Russian culture the famous Olenin salon, where distinguished scientists and artists came together, played a significant part. A. S.
