| 279 King Carol I of Romania (1835 – 1914) – a splendid ebony case as a gift for Grand Admiral von Köster Massive ebony, carved, painted, partly gilt, gilt bronze fittings. Profiled body with voluted frame. Wooden insert divided into four sections with old typewritten label (tr.) “From the estate of the German Grand Admiral v. Köster. Gift by King Carol I of Romania and his wife Elisabeth, née Princess von Wied (Carmen Silva)”. The top of the lid (cracked) with traces of painted blossoms and calligraphic writing, in the centre the crowned Romanian alliance coat of arms in relief with motto “Nihil sine Deo”. On the inside of the lid an applied, finely carved plaque with crowned sovereign’s cypher and motto. Fittings decorated with blossoms in relief. The four feet at the corners in the shape of three-dimensional, gilt lions. Lockable, com- plete with key. Carol I of the Hohenzollern dynasty ruled as king from 1881 to 1914 and was guided by Germany in terms of foreign policy. In 1887, Grand Admiral Hans von Köster (1844 – 1928) became commander of the armoured cruiser SMS King Wilhelm, the largest ship of the Imperial Navy at that time. On 28 June 1905, he was the first German navy officer to rise to the rank of Grand Admiral, in 1908 he was appointed President of the German Navy League, and on 21 June 1909, he was awarded the Diamonds to the Order of the Black Eagle.
