| 405 KUNST UND KUNSTHANDWERK ASIENS 519 Seltene Skulptur eines „Mond-­ Hasen”, Japan oder China, 19. Jhdt. Vollrund geschnitztes und polychrom gefass- tes Weichholz. Die Malerei verweist auf die mythologische Bedeutung dieser Skulptur. Der Legende nach opferte sich der Hase und sprang freiwillig ins Feuer, um so als ein ange- messenes Mahl für den Herrn des Himmels zu dienen. Daraufhin war der Herr des Himmels so gerührt, dass er den Körper des Hasen wie- dererweckte und mit zum Mond nahm, wo er ihn in einem Tempel bestattete. Der bei der Opferung entstandene Rauch schlug sich auf der glänzenden Mondoberfläche nieder und ahmt dort heute noch seine Gestalt nach. Deutliche Altersschäden. A rare Japanese or Chinese carved and painted wood sulpture of a “moon rabbit”, 19th century Carved and polychromely painted soft wood. The painting refers to the mythological mean- ing of this sculpture. In one of the Buddhist Jataka tales a rabbit that has no other food to offer to a beggar than grass throws itself into a fire to offer its own body as a meal. However, the rabbit was not burnt, as the beggar revealed that he was Ś akra and thus drew an image of the rabbit on the Moon to perpetuate its ge­ nerous sacrifice.Damages due to age and pest infestation (no longer active).
