An extremely rare air pistol, designed to resemble a flintlock, Edward Bates of London, circa 1770 The pressure container octagonal turning to round, shaped like a brass barrel with internal, eight-groove rifled bore in 10.5 mm calibre. Mount- ed with a silver front sight, a delicately engraved banner with the signa- ture “BATES” at the breech. A small dent on the left side of the cham- ber. The brass tang with deeply etched decorative tendrils. Its outward appearance is of a fully functional flintlock without a vent hole. The lock plate engraved with a repeated signature. The lock side plate with relief embellishment and trophy decoration. The slightly carved full stock in walnut with brass furniture, engraved and finely decorated in relief. The butt plate with a mascaron. The wooden ramrod with horn tip. An old collection number in brass attached. Length 52 cm. Edward Bates is documented as a gunsmith in Brounlow Street, Lon- gacre, from 1763 to 1778.
