240 | An etched and gilt morion for the Saxon trabant guard, Nuremberg, end of the 16th century The iron skull forged in one piece, with a tall, lightly roped comb, the turned brim tapering to a point on both sides. Gilt ornamental stripes with scrolling leaves etched onto the outer sur- faces. The Saxon coat of arms on both sides of the comb, the helmet skull with a portrait of the Roman heroes Mucius Scaevola and Marcus Curtius, each in an etched, gilt cartouche on a blued background. A border of three-dimen- sional lion’s head rivets in gilt bronze along the lower edge. The brim with the Nuremberg inspection mark on one side and two tears of differing length. The gilding somewhat abrad- ed in places. Height 28 cm.
