| 419 Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Prince of Great Britain and Ireland (1874 - 1899) – a personal guard infantry officer’s sword M 1889 with an 1893 Damascus steel blade Single-edged blade of forged Damascus steel with double fullers on both sides and a double-edged point. Etched, gilt decorative tendrils and floral ornaments above the long, gilt ricasso. The Turk’s head mark and “R” stamped onto the back, along with the inscription “J. Robrecht, Hoflieferant, Berlin”. The knuckle-bow hilt with traces of gilding, the pommel cap engraved with the coat of arms of the Prince of Great Britain, which also serves as a seal. The fish-scale grip (rubbed in places) with silver wire winding and appliquéd, silver guard star still bearing remnants of enamel. Leather finger strap. Length 99 cm. Steel scabbard with two movable suspension rings (one replaced). Total length 103.5 cm. The ricasso and the drag stamped with the inventory/ collection number “Q 22”, moreover the number “E. 92” stamped be- low the locket and on the obverse guard plate, partially invalidated. Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the son of Alfred Duke of Edinburgh and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, joined the 1st Foot Guard Regiment in 1893 as Second Lieutenant for one year. Rebelling against his strict mother, the prince took refuge in unsuitable love affairs, marrying Mabel Fitzgerald, an Irish woman, in 1897. On account of his mother’s endeavour to have his marriage annulled, he is alleged to have attempted to shoot himself during the celebrations for his parent’s silver wedding anniversary in 1899, succumbing to his injuries in a sanatorium in Merano a week later. 258178 II - € 4.000 4582 Degen für Offiziere der Infanterie, Form IIb, Trageweise um 1790 Etwas verschliffene Stichklinge mit abgeflachtem Mittelgrat, am Ansatz beidseitig Messingeinlagen mit gravierten Inschriften „Pro Gloria et Patria”. Reich reliefiertes, vergoldetes Buntmetall-Bügelgefäß, am terzseitigen Klappstichblatt ein bekrönter Adler mit Herrscherchiffre „WR II”, Kunststoffhilze mit Wicklung aus Neusilberdraht und aufgelegter Chiffre „WR II”. Stahlscheide (nach­ lackiert) mit einem beweglichen Tragering und Reitöse. Portepee mit silbern durchzogenem Lederband. Anhängende Sammlungsnummer. Partiell leicht beschädigt, Altersspuren.
