| 353 Prince Alfons of Bavaria (1862 - 1933) - a personal seal and a sealed envelope Sculpture of a navy cadet with straw hat and cadet’s dagger of sil- ver-plated brass (slightly rubbed) on a gilt base. The silver seal surface with cut mirror monogram “A” underneath the royal Bavarian crown in the early form used by Prince Alfons circa 1880. Overall height 112 mm. Comes with an envelope addressed to Prince Alfons’ future spouse “la Princesse Louise d’Orleans - Paris - 45 Avenue Friedland” in his own hand, with postmark dated 18 February (illegible year cypher, before April 1891), the reverse with well-preserved red wax mark stamped with this seal. Enclosed is a folded, printed image of the Prince. Prince Adalbert of Bavaria (1828 - 1875) was a great collector of seals belonging to famous contemporary personalities, a passion he shared with his son Prince Alfons, who added numerous spectacular objects to his father’s collection until his death in 1933. Displayed under invento- ry no. 41 in the special exhibition “Das Siegel in meiner Hand - Petschaften bedeutender Persönlichkeiten des 18., 19. und des frühen 20. Jhdts.” (tr. “The seal in my hand - seals belonging to significant personalities of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries”) from 23 July to 15 November 2001. Included are the former exhibition cards, two photographs and a copy of the press release for the exhibition, written by the director of the museum at the time. Enclosed two letters from Dr. Ernst von Possart to Prince Alfons (1900 and 1913), two letters from Felix Mottl to Prince Alfons and his adjutant, respectively (1905 and 1909), as well as the rare “Biographien der Künstler” (ca. 1912) in an envelope addressed to Prince Joseph Clemens of Bavaria. Important photo album of the Wagner Festival (only few artists of that time are not represented) with very personal and affectionate autographs of the family. Die silber- ne Siegelfläche mit geschnittenem Spiegelmonogramm „A” unter der bayerischen Königskrone in der frühen, von Prinz Alfons etwa um 1880 verwendeten Form. Gesamthöhe 112 mm. Dazu ein eigenhändig von Prinz Alfons an seine zukünftige Gemahlin „la Princesse Louise d’Orleans - Paris - 45 Avenue Friedland” adressier- tes Briefkuvert mit Poststempel vom 18.2. (undeutliche Jahreszahl, vor April 1891), die Rückseite mit gut erhaltener, roter Wachssiegelung durch dieses Petschaft. Einliegend eine gefaltete, gedruckte Aufnahme des Prinzen. Bereits Prinz Adalbert von Bayern (1828 - 1875) war als großer Sammler von Petschaften bekannter Zeitgenossen berühmt, eine Leidenschaft, die auch sein Sohn Prinz Alfons teilte, der die Sammlung seines Vaters bis zu seinem Tode 1933 um zahlreiche spektakuläre Stücke erweiterte. Provenienz: ZAM - Zentrum für Außergewöhnliche Museen, Mün- chen. Ausgestellt unter der Inventarnummer 41 in der Sonderausstellung „Das Siegel inmeiner Hand - Petschaften bedeutender Persönlichkeiten des 18., 19. und des frühen 20. Jhdts.” vom 23.7. bis 15.11.2001. Dazu die ehemaligen Ausstellungskärtchen, zwei Fotos und in Kopie ein Presse- schreiben für die Ausstellung der damaligen Museumsleiterin. Dieses Petschaft wurde im ZAM zusammen mit einem Brief König Ludwigs II. an den Prinzen Alfons von Bayern ausgestellt. 4456
