Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen (1892 - 1918) – silver cup for his 61st official victory in aerial combat on 3.9.1917 Smooth, conical silver cup with engraved and horizontally shaded inscription “61. - Sopwith Pup”, underneath the date “3.9.17”. Struck in the base imperial hallmark “800” and number “19”. Height 7 cm, weight 39.82 g. Manfred von Richthofen, the most successful fighter pilot of the First World War. To his officially confirmed 80 victories in aerial com- bat three non-confirmed victories can be added, two in September 1915 and one in April 1916 as observer. He had most of his victories with an Albatros aircraft, he only had 19 victories with his legendary Fokker Dr. I triplanes. His 61st victory was in one of the latter, on 3rd Septem- ber 1917 at 7:35 am he flew a Fokker Dr.I FI 102/17 when he shot down a Sopwith Pup of the Royal Flying Corps near Bousbecque. Very rare collector’s piece. Unlike the expen- sive gifts which flying aces such as Immel- mann, Boelcke or von Richthofen received from kings or high-ranking generals and officers, these plain brandy tumblers were the squadron’s expression of respect and recogni- tion for each of Richthofen’s confirmed victo- ries. It is unknown if he received this distinc- tion for his final victories inMarch/April 1918, but von Richthofen must have received more than 70 of these cups, but to our knowledge only one such cup was every offered for sale.
